BESO volunteers often regret that we can't do more. In Bocas del Toro, outlying village schools are extremely basic as are the communities as a whole. Few homes, let alone schools, have water flushing toilets or enclosed kitchens. The "basic package" for a village school consists of a classroom, basic teacher's quarters, a water catchment system and a cooking area. If any of these items are lacking, or in poor repair, BESO can help.
Our intention is not attempt to change or upgrade entire communities. Our goal is simply to help out with whatever funds and time we have to assure that every child is given an equal opportunity to learn in as clean and safe an environment as possible.
All requests for school projects are considered on a need basis. To request a school grant we require the following:
A written request outlining the overall project, the community involved., the type of school and the approximate number of children directly affected by the request
Written quotations for all materials required and related costs to complete the project
An explanation of who will be providing the labor (if labor is required)
The name of the Project Sponsor
The Project Sponsor is a vital link between BESO and the school. They are responsible for overseeing the project, handling all money given by BESO, obtaining receipts for materials and reporting back to BESO when the project is completed. Basically, a Project Sponsor is the person(s) responsible for interacting with the school teachers, community members and BESO.
BESO is completely dependent on the generosity of financial donors and dedicated volunteers. Won't you help us to help the children of Bocas del Toro. Volunteer now to sponsor a school project. So little effort can impact so many children.
